Gene and Melissa after the 2016 Charlie Horse half-marathon in Reading, PA. We weren’t last!
Hi! We are Gene Day and Melissa Vaught, a pair of enthusiastic recreational endurance runners (And sometimes cyclists. And in Gene’s case, a swimmer too.). We live in Seattle, WA, but travel far and wide across the world.
In our professional lives, Melissa is a biochemist and research administrator. Gene is a systems engineer and data scientist. In our personal lives, we are usually training for some kind of race. After several years of road running when we lived in giant cities on the East Coast, we have become converts to the deep woods and lush valleys of the Pacific Northwest – Gene’s long-ago and once-again home.
Joining us on our adventures are Rocco and Fetti (short for Confetti), our simple-but-adventurous companions – with their own instagram feed (#roccoandfettitraveltheworld).

Rocco and Fetti of worldwide internet fame!
Boundary Conditions is a website about running, travel, and fitness aimed at everyone. We’re not fast, we don’t win races, we’re not professionals. We just love getting out there and putting whatever we’ve got into having a great time outside. We’ll be writing trail reports, publishing “how we do it” pieces, and reviewing gear from the perspective of hobbyists. Our goal is to love the process, cross the finish line, and then eat pancakes.
